However, two patients showed a deteriorated clinical condition during the tapering of corticosteroid. Treatment with corticosteroid was very effective in all cases. All cases shared common clinical findings, such as acute onset, symmetrical polyarthritis, pitting edema of the hands and feet, and being negative for rheumatoid factor in serum. It is important to be aware of RS 3 PE syndrome when encountering elderly patients with polyarthritis who are negative for rheumatoid factor.
